Keeping the Flame Alive

31 January 2020

Wera Hobhouse is very conscious of being your Member of a new Parliament at a truly momentous time in our history.

Brexit is a Conservative Party policy, implemented by them in government, which so many millions of us have opposed as being contrary to British values and interests.

Working alongside some of you, Wera founded Bath for Europe just days after the Referendum in 2016. Having invested so much passion and energy into preventing Brexit for three and a half years, the past weeks have been very difficult for her emotionally as our departure from the European Union has come closer and closer. Wera understands that many of you have had a similar experience.

While she fully accepts that the fight to stop Brexit is now over, Wera will always have the ambition for the UK to be at the heart of Europe, because she is convinced that this is central to our values. She believes that ours is an inherently open, tolerant and outward-looking nation. Wera will keep the flame alive and will never give up fighting for what she believes in.

Collectively, we must be very clear that the UK’s departure from the EU tonight will not “Get Brexit Done.” As we have already seen, and will see increasingly in the months ahead, the government faces many difficult decisions in connection with Brexit and our nation’s place in the world. One of my main duties will be to hold this government to account. Wera will be challenging any policies that would leave the residents of Bath, or indeed of our country as a whole, worse off.
