Bath MP speaks about Sustainability Targets for the New Parliament
23 January 2020
Wera Hobhouse, MP for Bath, spoke during the Policy Connect Parliamentary Reception on the Sustainability Targets for the New Parliament.
She was invited to speak in her capacity as Liberal Democrat Spokesperson for the Climate Emergency, and was there alongside her counterparts from Labour, The Conservatives, and The Scottish National Party. There were also speakers from the independent Committee on Climate Change and Greenpeace.
Following the event Wera said:
“I would like to thank Policy Connect for putting together an insightful afternoon in Parliament.
It was interesting to hear from my colleagues across the political spectrum. Cross party working is key to achieving the ambitious climate goals which have been set. However, we must acknowledge the differences between our environmental policies. On the opposition benches we agree largely agree on the importance of fighting climate change and we are on the same page when it comes to asking for climate action now.
And yet the party of Government, although saying all the right things, seems to be far more complacent. A lot of promises around climate change were made during the election and the Government must be held accountable.
This is not an easy fix, we will all have to make compromises, and yet I still believe that we can beat the climate emergency.
It was encouraging to see all the politicians and experts in one place – talking about the reality of climate change and how we achieve net zero. I will continue to work to stress the urgency of this crisis and to build a sustainable future for our children.”
