Bath’s Volunteer Heroes: A Community Conversation

Covid-19 continues to have a profound impact on many aspects of our daily lives.

Throughout the past year and into 2021, frontline workers have and will continue to look after us, through the health and care services, emergency services, deliveries, armed services and utilities. But one of the most extraordinary things we’ve seen is the coming together of our local communities, and those generous individuals willing to give up their spare time to support others.

In her first public Zoom meeting of 2021, Bath MP Wera Hobhouse will be talking with some of the residents who have given up their time to help make the Community Wellbeing Hub the success it has become. In a combined effort that is almost unique in the country, the Hub brings together BaNES 3SG, B&NES Council, Virgin Care and many other agencies.

Wera’s guests will include:

    • Sarah Williams-Martin, Emergency Volunteer Response Manager for BaNES 3SG, who has been fundamental to the success of the volunteer response

    • Miles Lloyd, Coordinator for 3SG & Compassionate Community, who also volunteers to support all the projects they run, such as the wellbeing packs initiative

    • Liz Ganapathy, volunteer who manages the collection of payments for the shopping from the clients

    • Annabel Saunders has done over 70 shops and prescription pickups as a volunteer, for those in her neighbourhood, building strong relationships with those in need

    • Tracy Barnes, co-founder of the Bath Sewing Collective whose more than 1,000 volunteer members have sewn over 10,000 items to support our community including scrubs and face coverings

Wera said: “Bath can take great pride in its residents. They saw a need and offered their time to help look after others during this pandemic. This is the kind of behaviour that often gets overlooked by the headline writers, but it’s why our Community Wellbeing Hub has been such a success, providing support and signposting for the most vulnerable members of our community. Please join me for an inspiring conversation, to learn, to understand, and to find out what we can do to help our fellow residents. You will be able to submit questions to the speakers.”
