Hundreds of residents of all ages turned out in the centre of Bath on Saturday March 5th for the peaceful “Stand with Ukraine” demonstration. Wera made a passionate speech at the powerful and emotional event.
Commenting afterwards, Wera said:
“My warmest thanks to the two university students who organised the event for bringing so many of us together and to the speakers who shared their moving and inspiring perspectives.
“The people of Bath showed their compassion for Ukraine today. We are seeing the foundations of our democratic way of life shaken by an aggressor who does not share our values.
“We salute the bravery of Ukrainians who defend democracy and fight despotism. This is a demonstration against Putin’s regime - not the Russian people who are having the little freedom they have enjoyed taken from them.
“The UK government must impose the harshest sanctions against anyone trying to launder their money in the city of London. We must hold our own leaders to account.
“We will always welcome refugees who flee war and persecution. I am calling for visa-free travel for Ukrainians seeking a safe haven in the UK. And I am calling for funding for local councils like ours who are eager to welcome refugees into our communities.”
