On Monday Wera spoke in the Environment Bills’ second reading – standing up for better protection for our treasured landscape and environment.
In Bath we know the value of our natural resources - Wera is proud to represent such a beautiful constituency. However, without support from central government we are not able to truly tackle the issues we face, especially around air quality.
This Environment Bill, put forward by the Tories, is not nearly powerful enough to protect our world for future generations. We are in a climate emergency and damage caused by our warming planet will wreak havoc on the landscapes we know and love. It is a toothless version of our current provisions: which come from the EU and can hold the government to account through hefty fines.
This is just another example of how this Government's fixation on leaving the EU will cause untold damage. We are facing a true climate emergency, and our environment is in the firing line – now is not the time to turn our backs on our neighbours. This is simply not a fight we can win on our own.
