Speech: Amazon Deforestation

8 October 2019

Deforestation in Brazil is a global crisis.

We all depend on the Amazon rainforest's role as the 'lungs of the world' to capture and store a huge amount of carbon dioxide - a greenhouse gas which is warming our planet. On Monday in Westminster, Wera spoke on the importance of Britain remaining within the European Union, so that we can use collective pressure to ensure Brazil’s populist president Jair Bolsonaro has strong incentives to protect the Amazon, as well as the threat of economic action to ensure he does so.

No one person or country or continent can solve the climate crisis. We must act together.
