PM Discounts 16 Million People

When the Brexit deal is eventually finalised, it must be put to a People’s Vote. We must clarify with the people whether this is a deal that is actually acceptable to them.

It is democratic right of the nation to have the final say. Vote Leave promised an extra £350m a week to the NHS and they promised that we would be better off outside the European Union. Promises have been broken, and the people need to have their voices heard.

The deal we were promised won’t look anything like the deal we’ll end up with as the landscape of Brexit has changed so much over the last 2 years. It is only right we have a People’s Vote to put this to bed.

When 52% of the country voted to leave the EU on the 23rd of June, it took the government over 9 months to trigger Article 50. Why? Because they didn’t have a plan. Theresa May only triggered it to meet her self-imposed deadline, and she still didn’t have an actual strategy about how to achieve a good deal for the UK.

The only piece of paper that David Davis, the Brexit Secretary, actually produced whist in office was his own resignation letter. The Brexit negotiations have been a disgrace from start to finish. Brexit will make the country less well off, less influential, and the people need to decide if this is what they want.

In Parliament, I asked the Prime Minister this week for the nation to have the final say on the Brexit deal, and stated that there is disagreement within the Conservative party about what the people actually voted for. She replied that the biggest disagreement was between the Liberal Democrats and the people of this country who voted to the remain in the European Union. This statement completely discounts the 48% of our nation who voted to remain, thats 16 million people who are in agreement with the Liberal Democrats and who's opinion has been utterly disregarded.

Wera said: “The Conservative Party are not up to the job of delivering a good deal on Brexit. They are falling apart on the international stage during the most important period in this country’s modern history. We must have a People’s Vote so the nation can have the final say.”
