Lib Dems Win Big in North Shropshire

17 December 2021

The Liberal Democrats overcame a majority of almost 23,000 votes to storm to victory in the North Shropshire by-election yesterday. The result, though a surprise to many, is a clear rebuke of the Prime Minister and his party's sleaze.

North Shropshire, a constituency that has been represented by the Conservatives for almost 200 years, will now be represented by Lib Dem Helen Morgan, a local business person and parish councillor.

Voters turned against the Conservatives in their droves, fed up of Tory sleaze and lying. Instead, they backed Helen and her plan to properly fund ambulance services to tackle ever increasing waiting times, which affects Bath along with much of England.

This result shows that not only are the Lib Dems winning again, they can beat the Tories even in their safest of seats. Voters obviously do not trust this government and this prime minister to act in the best interest of our country. Voters can't even trust them to tell the truth.

Bath MP, Wera Hobhouse commented:

"I'm thrilled by the result in North Shropshire and can't wait to welcome my new colleague, Helen Morgan, to the Commons. Winning with a massive swing in the vote shows that even Conservatives in the safest of seats, should be worried at the next election. I'm sure some of my constituency neighbours in the West Country will be.

"This government needs to wake up and realise that the public will not allow lying and corruption to continue. The Prime Minister has a mountain to climb in order to restore public trust, but he can start by apologising to all families bereaved by Covid-19 for his flouting of Covid regulations last Christmas."

Cllr Kevin Guy, Leader of Bath and North East Somerset Council said:

"Liberal Democrats up and down the country are working hard to hold this government to account, but more importantly, we're working to represent our residents on the issues that matter to them. Whilst the Conservatives keep rabbiting on about levelling up, whatever that means, we'll be finding solutions for real problems facing our constituents.

"Problems like the unacceptably long ambulance wait times in our city. We've heard about one case of an elderly gentleman who had to wait over 7 hours for an ambulance after a fall. This isn't right and is an indictment of how the Conservatives have funded our services over the past decade. Bath's Lib Dem MP, Wera Hobhouse, is taking this fight to Parliament and will continue to stand up for local residents."
