Bath MP visits University of Bath to meet with ‘policy-makers of the future’

5 March 2024

On 1st March, Wera Hobhouse, Liberal Democrat MP for Bath, visited the University of Bath to attend a guest speaker event. Organised by the university’s Liberal Democrats Society and Politics Society, the event offered students a valuable opportunity to connect with their representative and delve into pertinent political topics.

The event began with Wera addressing the students, elaborating on the day to day activities of an MP and providing a glimpse of her approach leading up to the General Election.

The floor was then opened for a lively exchange of ideas during the student-led Q&A session, allowing students to pose their queries directly to their MP. This covered topics ranging from encouraging women into politics, focusing on the passing of Wera’s Worker Protection Bill, to the Conservative’s decision to scrap HS2 and how to encourage friends and family to become more involved in politics.

The attendees gained valuable insights and a deeper understanding of British democracy and parliamentary proceedings. With 2024 widely expected to be an election year, Wera made sure to encourage students to register to vote to ensure their voices are heard and the issues that matter most to them are addressed.

Will Darling, student organiser of the event and committee member of both societies, said, "We were thrilled to host Wera and provide our members with an invaluable opportunity to engage directly with a political figure. The event not only encouraged open dialogue, but also underscored the importance of active civic engagement within the student community."

Wera Hobhouse, Liberal Democrat MP for Bath, commented: “It was a pleasure to meet with students to discuss the myriad of political issues facing our young people. With a General Election on the horizon, I want to emphasise the importance of continued collaboration in promoting political awareness and participation among students. It is so encouraging to see so many students thoughtfully engage politically; there were definitely a few policy-makers of the future in the room with us this afternoon!”
