Speech: Letting Fees Ban - Victory for Liberal Lords

22 May 2018

The decision to ban letting fees is a result of maintained pressure and campaigning from the Liberal Democrats, and in particular the Lib Dem Lords.

The Lib Dems have consistently called for the government to cap upfront deposits, ban letting agency fees and clamp down on rogue landlords.

In a speech in the Houses of Parliament, Wera argued that they must do more. Local governments needs funds so these measures can be truly enforced. A HelpĀ To Rent scheme, which would provide government-backed tenancy deposit loans, would also seriously help many people in the country.

The end of private rented tenancy is the now the number one cause of homelessness in this country. Wera called on the government to work harder to end the plight which young people suffer across the UK, as they struggle to afford a place of their own.
