Greater Renters’ Rights Agreed In Parliament

24 January 2019

The Liberal Democrats have today secured measures in the Tenants Fees Bill to limit the fees that could be charged to a tenant...

These measures, in addition to a greater degree of transparency when deciding not to refund a holding deposit and a limit to the maximum security deposit a landlord can require to five weeks rent, were secured by Liberal Democrats in the House of Lords and agreed by the House of Commons today.

Liberal Democrat Housing Spokesperson Wera Hobhouse said:

“Tenant fees are often unreasonable, lack transparency and make the upfront costs of moving extortionate. People should not be punished for moving home."

"I am therefore glad the House of Commons has agreed to Liberal Democrat proposals to improve renters’ rights, not least limiting the fees that could be charged to a tenant."

“Further progress is still needed and possible. That is why the Liberal Democrats will continue to campaign for government-backed loans to help people afford a tenancy deposit, and for tighter regulation in the private rented sector to stop rogue landlords.”
